This news page highlights the latest Kelly and LFoK releases and sightings. If you have any Li'l Friends news to share, email me at karin@lilfriends.net

I have broken up the news page into three categories - amazon Kelly, klassic Kelly, and toddlers and babies. (Click the links to jump to that section.)

Amazon Kelly News
There has been a Kelly flood the last few weeks! I hope you have been able to see a few of these new kuties in person. Most shocking, of course, is the new larger sized Kelly doll. Mattel had hinted at Toy Fair earlier this year that there would be a new bigger sized Kelly to be released. There weren't any pictures or displays, so kollectors have been holding their breath ever since. With flashbacks to the lemonhead debacle of just a few years ago, it's no wonder kollectors were a bit worried. Well, the wait is over....

The Pop-Up Playhouse that was previewed on the Li'l News page last month is indeed the new larger sized Kelly. And here I was getting all excited about a new shoe mold! Mattel has made Kelly just slightly bigger than klassic Kelly, measuring in at six inches tall. Her scale is such that she can be paired with the Wee Friends Stacie dolls. The Pop-Up Playhouse is not the only set, either. There are actually five release sets already!

Kollectors are responding with mixed reviews. Some people dislike them simply based on principle. Others agree the larger Kelly is a nice doll as long as Mattel continues to make klassic Kelly dolls. And others enjoy her as much as klassic Kelly. In that vein, some new nicknames have been coined: Amazon Kelly, King Kong Kelly, Neaderthal Kelly, Big Foot Kelly, Klydesdale Kelly, Monster Kelly, Human Growth Hormone Kelly, Alice in Wonderland Kelly, Kamazon Kelly, KellyZilla, Kolossal Kelly, and Biggie Kelly. So far, Amazon Kelly is the name that is taking hold.

Now, so you can see what all the fuss is about, I have taken some pictures of Amazon Kelly in the buff and compared to klassic Kelly.

Klassic Kelly News
Even though Mattel has redesigned Kelly, the word from the reps is that Mattel fully intends to continue making klassic sized Kelly. Of course long time kollectors tend to be a bit skeptical since Mattel has a history of changing its mind without warning. The good news is that just as many, if not more, klassic Kelly dolls have been released than Amazons. That's encouraging, right?!

Here are the two latest 5 pack "Bunch" sets in their packages. All of the dolls are very pretty, in my opinion.

It's still a mystery to us why Mattel makes a nice five doll bunch set and then releases basically the same dolls in single boxes. I guess if you can only afford $5 for a doll, one is better than none... In the foursome, Kayla is the doll that was left out. And Deidre has swapped her outfit from the Bunch with Kayla's. So I guess you could say Kayla is somewhat represented in the foursome.

The 12 Dancing Princesses Kelly sized dolls are quite interesting once you take them out of the box. Sadly, all six of the dolls have a molded skirt and legs. Other than their arms, they are not posable or able to stand on their own without the special spinning stand. The dolls have pretty heads and may be good candidates for beheading and body swapping.

On the playset front, Toys R Us has an interesting set. The Playroom & Dolls Playset include two previously released dolls - Sunny Day Kelly and Melody. Also included are lots of accessories to play with.

Did you notice that Kelly has a new logo? What do you think of the green lettering?

The recently released Teacher Barbie and Baby Doctor Barbie sets are also available in AA versions. The AA versions seemed to take longer than usual to hit store shelves.
